Aviva: Brits behave differently once behind the wheel

A new study carried out by insurer Aviva and Professor Geoff Beattie of the University of Manchester has concluded that Brits undergo a personality change not unlike that described in the novel 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' when behind the wheel of a car.

Of the 4,000 respondents questioned, 16 per cent admitted to adopting a 'racing driver' frame of mind once their engine is switched on, disregarding speed limits and overtaking other drivers in built-up areas.

One-third of motorists confessed to driving at faster speeds to impress others, while one-quarter said they take phone calls while driving.

Male drivers were found to be twice as likely to jump a red light than their female counterparts, while the most risk-taking age group was discovered to be 17 to 21-year-olds.

In related news, research conducted by insurance group Admiral revealed last week that rear-end bumps cost the UK £500 million every year.
