M&S Money: Save funds on a family break

British families could save up to £135 on their holidays this year by taking some time out to check the tipping customs of their destinations, it has been claimed.

According to a survey conducted by M&S Travel Money, 40 per cent of Brits do not research the tipping culture of their holiday destinations, meaning that they could be paying out 30 per cent more than they need to while abroad.

One in six Brits wrongly believe they need to tip in Japan – a country where leaving behind extra cash is not customary. Furthermore, 39 per cent of women and 28 per cent of men admitted that they do not know where tipping applies and where it does not.

An additional one in ten Brits said that they have found their holiday kitty's lighter than planned in the past due to their over-enthusiastic tipping habits.

Any pennies that Brits can save while away may be much-needed this year, as the Home Office has announced that passport fees will rise as of September.
