NEA: Government must act to curb high fuel prices

Energy price reductions need to be passed on to consumers by utility companies and the government needs to play an intervening role to ensure this happens.

This is the viewpoint of Maria Wardrobe, director of communications for National Energy Action (NEA), an organisation working to eradicate fuel poverty.

She stated that the government needs to introduce a "mandatory social tariff", which wills serve to protect low-income families from rising fuel prices while also creating enough funds for investment into climate change measures.

She added: "We also need to prioritise energy efficiency and further resources are needed for the government's flagship Warm Front scheme, as we will see funding fall by almost 50 per cent from April 1st next year".

This week, the government is set to reveal the details of its Renewable Energy Strategy, which aims to outline plans to reach the climate change targets set for 2020.
