Brits 'to take 56m holidays this year'

Britons will collectively take 56 million holidays this year as they laugh in the face of recession and head off to sunnier climes.

This is according to a survey conducted by Sainsbury's Travel Insurance, which found that break-mad Brits will spend an accumulative £43.86 billion on their holidays in 2009.

More than one in three respondents to the poll said they would travel within Europe, while 670,000 individuals admitted to bumping up the number of holiday they take this year as they attempt to escape the recession misery at home.

"Despite tough economic conditions, it would appear that rather than sacrificing our holidays, we Britons may even be taking more breaks in a bid to put all the credit-crunch doom and gloom behind us," explained Sam Marrs, manager of Sainsbury's Travel Insurance.

According to M&S Travel Money, families could save money while on holiday by researching the tipping habits of their destinations and not paying too much when it comes to leaving gratuities.
