In light of this, the organisation has suggested some measures that can be taken to ensure that homes do not appear attractive to potential thieves.
Basic security steps are an ideal place to start, it advises, including installing good window and door locks as well as a burglar alarm.
Locking garages, gates and sheds and safely storing away ladders and tools, which could be used by thieves, is also a good idea, it adds.
Furthermore, adds Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at the firm, families "should cancel any deliveries they may be expecting and ask a neighbour to keep an eye on the property".
Direct Line became the first insurance firm to use the telephone as its major means of communication when it was established in 1985.
