Parents 'should not book cheap holidays in term time'

Although it may make sense to book a holiday outside of peak season, parents should think twice before taking their children out of school for the chance of a cheap holiday.

This is the viewpoint of Chris Keates, the general secretary of NASUWT, the largest teachers' union in the UK. He stated that the organisation cannot condone parents taking their children out of school for the sake of a bargain holiday.

Mr Keates said that education cannot be taken for granted and must take priority among everyone in society - particularly parents.

He added: "The problem really comes from the high cost of holidays outside term time. The responsibility lies with the travel agents who set the seasons and the prices."

A survey conducted by mumsnet this week found that 81 per cent of parents are angry about the increase travelling prices undergo during school holiday periods.
