European debit card scheme 'unlikely to strike a chord in the UK'

Although EU countries are expected to support the uptake of a new Europe-wide debit card payment scheme, it is unlikely to have much of an impact upon the UK, according to one organisation.

A female spokesperson for the UK Cards Association has stated that the system is more tailored towards Europeans who have trouble using their debit cards outside their home country's borders.

She explained: "Given that UK debit cards are all either Visa or MasterCard branded, and can be used overseas wherever those brands are accepted, the impact on UK consumers is likely to be limited."

That is, the representative added, unless it applies to smaller outlets that do not accept most major debit cards.

The Single Euro Payments Area project aims to allow citizens and businesses to make payments across EU countries faster with payments legislation between them being adjusted so they work in unison with one another.
