The humble phone call is 'dying out' as Brits get texting

Brits are increasingly turning away from the traditional phone call in favour of texting their friends and family instead, it has been revealed.

According to a poll from uSwitch.com, the 58 per cent of Brits make one or no calls a day on their mobile phones and in the case of home landlines, this figure was found to be 44 per cent.

Furthermore, Ofcom figures show that 60 billion text messages are sent every year in the UK, with the average person sending 67 a month.

"Consumers will want maximum flexibility to switch between texting, emailing and calling and the industry will have to respond with creative mix and match packages to allow this," explained Jason Glynn, communications expert at uSwitch.com.

In related news, social networking site Facebook announced this week that its global membership has hit the 250 million mark.
