Direct Line: Businesses should take measures against flooding

Firms in the UK need to ensure that they have fully taken the possibility of flooding into account as part of their disaster recovery plans, according to Direct Line for Business.

According to research carried out on behalf of the firm earlier this year, 112,000 small businesses were affected by floods in 2008, leaving their premises and stock damaged and unfit for trading.

Of these, almost one-third, or 31 per cent, did not have comprehensive insurance in place to cover the costs of damage.

"It is vital that small business owners and sole traders take steps to protect themselves against unforeseen incidents, like flooding wherever possible, particularly at a time when finances are already stretched," commented Direct Line spokesperson Kate Syred.

Another organisation that recently warned about the impacts of water damage for businesses is Aviva, which highlighted that fluctuating temperatures in the summer can often bring about flash floods.
