New Hardship Fund opened up by government

Worth a total of £16.7 million, the fund, which was announced three months ago by Chancellor Alistair Darling in the annual Budget, aims to help third sector organisations that deliver front-line services to the country's most disadvantaged sections of society.
Those that operate in areas such as health and social care, housing support, training and education on advice-giving and have a turnover of £200,000 or more annually are eligible to apply for financial help.
"This grant programme is responding quickly to the challenges faced by the third sector during these difficult times when demand for their services is increasing, but when their incomes may be falling," explained Angela Smith, minister for the third sector.
Meanwhile, nebusiness.co.uk reported this week that charities in the north-east of England have been hit hard by the recession.
