Small firms without online presence 'losing out financially'

According to figures released jointly by Mr Site and online payments organisation PayPal, more than half of small businesses in the UK do not have a website.

This is despite a poll conducted by Opinion Matters demonstrating that those that do make an average of 37 per cent more every year, the firms point out.

Overall, 61 per cent of small businesses providing goods in the UK have not yet forged an online presence, while 46 per cent of organisations providing services said the same thing.

"Not having a website is like leaving your shop front boarded up or refusing to tell customers anything about the services you provide," explained Cameron McLean, PayPal's general manager for UK merchant services.

A poll conducted by marketing firm the Arketi Group last month found that 80 per cent of journalists questioned said that businesses without websites are less credible than those with an online presence.
