FSB: More support must be offered to apprentices

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has outlined plans regarding how those taking on apprenticeships in the UK can be dealt a fairer hand.

Offering higher wages, forging a link between apprentices and companies and prioritising training funding for the smallest firms are all ways the situation can be improved, according to the FSB's new proposals.

Boosting training prospects in the UK is also key to tackling rising unemployment, it adds.

Some ways of doing this, the FSB suggests, would be to raise the minimum apprentice wage from £93 to £123 per week, as well as establishing a national Group Apprenticeship Programme to take on the administrative side of connecting potential apprentices with employers.

This news comes as the NHS announced that the number of apprenticeships it is offering is set to treble to more than 5,000 by March 2010. The move is part of a £25 million scheme designed to improve young peoples' employment prospects.
