Gap between advertised and actual broadband speeds "concerning"

Commenting on a recent report from Ofcom that highlighted significant discrepancies between advertised and actual broadband speeds in the UK, uSwitch.com has urged the industry not to promise what it cannot provide.

The service switching website pointed out that nobody signed up to eight Megabits per second (Mbps) contracts would realistically receive these speeds, which will be "concerning" for Brits.

It continued: "Consumers must be made aware of exactly what speeds are achievable where they live and the price of their package should reflect this - consumers should not be paying for something they cannot get."

This type of occurrence would not be tolerated in any other sector, it added. Using catering as an example, it said that diners would not accept a two-course meal when they had payed for three solely because the kitchen is too far from their table.

A survey undertaken by uSwitch.com last month found that just 52 per cent of broadband subscribers in the UK are happy with the speeds they receive.
