Businesses should stay focused on health and safety, Aviva says

Aviva has advised businesses that, though it is tempting to reduce spending in areas such as health and safety in a bid to cut costs, the effects of doing so could be less than economical in the long run.

A recent poll undertaken by Aviva found that 90 per cent of firms have an individual on their payrolls dedicated exclusively to health and safety matters.

However, though this is good news, says Kevin Chicken, training and consultancy manager for the firm, smaller businesses should ensure that they follow suit. Doing so, he added, can ensure they remain impartial and receive the best guidance possible.

"Businesses must recognise that cutting their health and safety budget is a false economy and that it should remain a top priority to ensure the safety of employees and the reputation of the business itself," Mr Chicken said.

Last month, Aviva also recommended that the agriculture industry should increase its efforts when it comes to health and safety, as it highlighted that more people are killed and injured annually in this sector than any other in the UK.
