Admiral car insurance finds Brits 'becoming greener drivers'

Provider of car insurance Admiral has found that Brits are becoming increasingly conscious of the environment when it comes to using their vehicles.

According to a poll undertaken by the group, 24 per cent of 3,167 respondents said that they participate in car sharing. This is compared to just 19 per cent in the 2008 poll.

When it comes to public transport, a significant shift has taken place, the survey discovered. Last year, 14 per cent of people said that they use it, a figure which has risen to 23 per cent in 2009.

Sue Longthorn, managing director of Admiral said: "This could be down to the recession - the fact that cars can be seen as a personal luxury and by cutting back on car use, you can save a bit of money."

A poll conducted by Abbey's online banking subsidiary cahoot showed that the recession is making Brits become greener as they strive to cut costs by switching off electrical items and buying energy-efficient lightbulbs.
