'Socially useful' jobs to be created to curb unemployment

Jobs funded by the taxpayer are set to be created by the Labour administration in a bid to tackle rising unemployment among the country's youths due to the economic downturn.

Overall, 47,000 six-month long posts are set to be created as part of the £1 billion plans, the Daily Mail reports.

Among the job titles will be tree planters, cooks, dance instructors and furniture restorers and youngsters between the ages of 18 and 24 who refuse to take one will have their benefits stopped.

Lord Mandelson, the business secretary, and Yvette Cooper, work and pensions secretary, announced that 117 organisations had already signed up to take part in the initiative.

However, the scheme is not without its critics, as Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance explains.

"The last thing we need is yet more public sector non-jobs. This initiative isn't free, the money comes out of the pockets of hardworking families and struggling businesses," he told the news provider.

Unemployment in the UK rose to 2.3 million during the three months to May, according to the Office for National Statistics.
