Supermarket brands 'increasingly favoured by Brits'

Brits attempting to save some money have turned to supermarkets' own-label products amid the recession, according to a new survey.

Conducted by uSwitch.com, the poll found that 73 per cent of Brits are buying own-label brands, compared to 25 per cent in August 2008.

A further 74 per cent of shoppers admitted that they use discount coupons - a figure up from the 26 per cent who said the same last year.

Overall, 45 per cent of respondents said that they believe food prices have risen over the last year and are striving to save on their shopping more as a result.

"In the face of uncertain economic forecasts, continued volatility in the housing market, and worrying increases in national unemployment, Brits are making savvy cutbacks to their fundamental spending," explained Rumina Hassam, personal finance expert at uSwitch.com.

Brits are in for some price rises in the New Year, as Alistair Darling aims to restore VAT to its original rate after reducing it temporarily during the recession.
