ABI: We will detect fraudulent travel insurance claims

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned that holidaymakers who lie about their belongings being stolen in order to claim money will be found out.

According to the ABI's figures, 4,300 fraudulent claims amounting to £5 million were made during 2008. It warned travellers considering making such claims that they could face prosecution when they are found out.

The ABI also said that police overseas have been notified of the growing problem and are becoming increasingly vigilant towards it as a result.

Director of general insurance and health for the organisation Nick Starling said: "The vast majority of claimants are honest, but the dishonest few are in for a nasty and expensive shock this summer."

These comments come after two girls from the UK were arrested in Brazil for claiming their belongings, some of which were found in their suitcases later, had been stolen during their trip.
