Children's Mutual: Dad's housework worth £17,000 a year

Britain's fathers are becoming more domesticated and dedicating more hours to their home lives, meaning that the time they are now spending around the home amounts to the equivalent of £17,000 of unpaid work a year.

This is according to the calculations of The Children's Mutual, which found that, on average, dads spend four hours and six minutes per week looking after their children and three hours 19 minutes cooking.

A further three hours eleven minutes goes on DIY, the research found, while three hours and nine minutes a week is spent on reviewing family finances.

Chief executive of the Children's Mutual David White said that saving is another way dads can benefit their children's futures.

"By saving regularly, and over the long-term, dads can help to give their children a financial springboard into adulthood that could be worth up to £37,100 when they reach age 18," he added.

The Children's Mutual has won the Moneyfacts award for best child trust fund provider every year since 2006, when the company was first founded.
