Students spending increased in 2009, says Halifax

Students have increased their spending in 2009, with their average weekly costs in four regions now above £200 per week, according to Halifax.

Research by the bank showed that the average weekly costs exceeded £200 in London, the south-east, south-west, and eastern regions of England.

Mike Regnier, current account director for Halifax, commented that many students were spending more without realising, suggesting it is now more important than ever to set a budget and stick to it.

He said: "Our research shows that many students are spending over £200 on weekly living expenses, despite thinking that they are cutting back."

The lowest average weekly cost was £157.50 in the north-east of England, while the average for the whole of the UK was £193.50.

Recent research from Halifax showed that burglary had increased by four per cent for a second consecutive quarter, and the number of unforced burglary claims is at its highest in August.
