Saga encourages students to be "security conscious"

Saga Home Insurance is urging students to be "security conscious" in the new university year so as not to become "easy targets" for burglars.

The insurance provider is offering its customers a free Student Survival Guide which has been put together by the Police force, the National Union of Students and the Home Office.

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of the Saga Group, has recommended that people going to university take steps to ensure their safety and security.

He said: "For many students, making new friends and socialising will be higher on their agenda than being security conscious. This could make them easy targets for criminals."

Saga Home Insurance has advised parents to carry out a security check when they arrive at their children's university residence, as its research indicates that one in three students will be a victim of crime every year.

The government's public services website DirectGov claims that a free information pack on burglary prevention has been available since earlier this year and that the police are focusing operations on catching repeat burglars.
