M&S Money Home Insurance says bikes targeted

M&S Money Home Insurance has warned that bike theft is an increasingly common crime and cyclists should be taking security precautions to prevent it.

It recommended storing your bike in a garage or locking it up in a well-lit area, making sure the wheels and any other removable parts are secured to the frame.

The company cited British Crime Survey (BCS) statistics which indicate that 540,000 bikes were stolen during 2008-09, which is up 22 per cent since the previous survey published last year.

Steve Price, head of general insurance at M&S, said: "Unfortunately bikes are a prime target for thieves and cyclists should take basic security steps to decrease the risk of becoming a victim."

Research by M&S Money showed that students are heavily affected by the problem, with 22 per cent of a poll of 2,000 saying they had had their bikes stolen.

The BCS also said that while its research showed a 22 per cent increase in bike thefts, police figures for this type of crime had not gone up at all.
