Travel insurance not 'an unnecessary add-on'

The Association of British Insurers has advised people that travel insurance should not be treated as an add-on when planning a holiday.

A spokesperson for the organisation commented that travelling without financial protection, especially in areas not covered by the European Health Insurance Card, is an unnecessary risk to take.

He stated that insurance should not be seen as some sort of luxury, but as a safeguard will protect someone if they happen to fall ill in a foreign country.

"It should be something that is regarded as a central, integral part of planning any trip overseas," he said.

One in ten people has gone on holiday without travel insurance, according to research released by Lloyds TSB this week.

The same study showed that 54 per cent of these travellers said they had not even thought about taking out a policy.
