Sainsbury's Home Insurance blames it on the weather

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has claimed that severe weather is the reason why the number of claims was so high last year compared to 2009.

Lucy Hunter, a manager at the organisation, claimed that the first three months of 2008 saw some extreme weather, the results of which could be seen by the number of claims it received.

She made her comments following the release of the Sainsbury's Home Insurance Index, which showed that storm damage accounted for 15.9 per cent of claims in the first half of 2008, but only 8.5 per cent this year.

The total number of claims during these periods dropped from 527,000 to 373,000 in the first half of 2009.

She said: "Our index shows the huge impact adverse weather conditions can have on the number and value of home insurance claims made."

The most common reason for claiming on house insurance was water escaping in 2008 and 2009.

Last month, research by the company showed that only 29 per cent of homeowners know that they must speak to their insurer and let them know of any changes they have made to their property.
