Sheila's Wheels finds women 'anxious about getting in their cars alone'

Sheila's Wheels, the car insurance provider catering specifically to women, has conducted research showing that one-third of female drivers in the UK are nervous about not finding their car keys fast enough when they are alone.

The survey, conducted on behalf of the group by Fly Research, found that 12 per cent of women motorists – the equivalent of 2.2 million individuals – have had their bag or belongings stolen while distracted.

Overall, 75 per cent said that they feel vulnerable when walking to their cars alone at night, while 37 per cent said that searching for their keys makes this situation worse.

As a result of these findings, Sheila's Wheels has invented the KeyRing, a device that disguises women's car keys as rings and means that accessing their vehicles could be easier and faster.

"We hope that by developing this concept and gauging public opinion, car manufacturers will get in touch with a view to producing the Sheila's Wheels KeyRing themselves," explained Jacky Brown, a spokesperson for the firm.

During the summer, Sheila's Wheels also advised those going abroad for a driving holiday this year to check their insurance policies to ensure they are covered.
