Scottish Widows finds 45% believe property is best investment

Scottish Widows has announced the results of a survey which revealed that 48 per cent of people believe that investing in property is the best move to maximise their hard-earned nest eggs.

This is compared to 28 per cent of people who said the same in 2008.

Rather than following the advice of experts, people tend to put their money into things they better understand, said Jason Butler from Bloomsbury Financial Planning.

He added that people reason "that there is always going to be a return in property and it is a good thing to invest in, despite the fact that we are going through a major drought".

Meanwhile, in the opinion of Peter O'Donovan, head of mortgages at independent financial advice firm Bestinvest, house prices may have hit their lowest point, meaning that the property market could begin to pick up in 2010.
