Confused.com: Smaller energy providers could be cheaper

Confused.com has suggested that moving to a smaller energy provider could save customers more than staying with one of the big six providers.

Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at Confused.com, pointed out that even if people do not want to switch to a smaller company, a simple way to save money is to pay by direct debit.

He pointed out that many customers are paying up to 15 per cent more than they need to by paying on receipt of the bill rather than setting up a monthly direct debit.

"And for those customers who would like to save even more, they could turn their back on the big six entirely and instead choose a smaller provider," he added.

The big six Mr Kloet refers to is British Gas, E.ON, EDF, npower, Scottish Power and SSE.

Last week, uSwitch released figures indicating that two smaller companies - OVO Energy and First:Utility - have released online energy plans which are cheaper than what the big six are offering.
