Sainsbury's Home Insurance advises students to check their policies

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has told students that they should check to see if they are covered by their parents' policy before investing in one of their own.

Some policies do cover members of the family while they are away from home but the organisation recommends being certain that you are insured.

Ben Tyte, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, pointed out that one in three students become victims of crime every year, so it is vital to make sure that people do not lose any possessions if something happens to them.

He said: "Before splashing out on insurance, students should certainly check to see if their parents' household contents insurance policy might provide cover whilst they're studying away from the family home."

The company estimates that there could up to £573 million of uninsured possessions in student houses and halls of residence.

Last week, Sainsbury's predicted that parents in the UK this will pay £5.29 billion in total to support their children through an undergraduate degree.
