Tell insurers about lodgers, advises ABI

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has told consumers that having a lodger could affect their policy, so they need to tell their insurance provider.

Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for the organisation, pointed out that your policy may be different if you are subletting or letting your house.

He stated that the reason the insurance provider needs to know this information is because a policy is directly related to risk, so if a living situation changes, it could alter the risk.

"If you are applying for insurance and you are taking a lodger, or if you have got a lodger, you should disclose that to your insurance company," said Mr Tarling.

This advice was echoed by a spokesperson for Halifax Home Insurance this week and a representative from esure said that its policies are null and void if a person takes in a tenant.

The company's reasoning for this is that the homeowner is giving access and responsibility to somebody else.
