Disappointing to see uninsured drivers, says moneysupermarket.com

The number of uninsured drivers out on the roads is "disappointing" to see and can be handed out serious penalties, a spokesperson for moneysupermarket.com has said.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at the comparison site, made his comments following the news that 62 per cent of the population believe that tougher punishments need to be given out to those who drive a car without insurance.

Driving uninsured is illegal and will result in six points being taken from a person's licence, noted Mr Sweeney.

He pointed out that £200 on-the-spot fines can be given out and offenders will have to pay a further £150 if the car in question is impounded.

"It is disappointing to see so many drivers taking to the roads uninsured and it's worrying that this number has increased to a staggering 33 per cent from the 2008 figures," he added.

Last week, Mr Sweeney said that he agreed with the new regulations brought in to ensure that even cars not being driven are be insured, because he felt it would stop people considering driving without insurance.
