Direct Line Home Insurance advises students use parents' policy

Direct Line Home Insurance has told students to look at their parents' policy and see if they can add their possessions onto it.

Andrew Lowe, head of the organisation, commented that it can save young people some of their loan money if they include things that they take with them to their university residence under their family home cover.

He stated that it is important for students to remember that they could have items stolen or they could lose them during all the excitement of the beginning of university.

Mr Lowe said: "Students' minds will understandably be on freshers' week and the start of term, plus the prospect of living on their own for the first time."

Direct Line Home Insurance pointed out that it will insure up to £5,000 of items under a family home contents policy.

Recent research by Sainsbury's Finance indicated that on average a student will have £3,548 worth of possessions that they will take with them to their accommodation when they go to university.
