Post Office advises baggage caution even with travel insurance cover

Post Office has told holidaymakers to be careful with their bags, even if they are insured.

Rachel Croft, head of travel insurance at the organisation, claimed that people take an average £1,113 worth of items with them when they go on their holidays, so it is important to be covered.

She advised checking to make sure that all of your belongings are covered by it, because sometimes particularly expensive items will need a separate or improved policy.

But Ms Croft added: "It is also important that you take care of your belongings, as failure to exercise reasonable care for the safety and supervision of your property may invalidate your insurance."

If people are not carrying an item with them, or if it is not locked away, then she pointed out that it probably will not be covered by a travel insurance policy.

This week, moneysupermarket.com pointed out that travellers need to tell their insurers if they intend on doing any extreme sports, as this will affect their premium.
