Confused.com says watch out for exit penalties

Confused.com has advised consumers to shop around when their fixed-term utility bill is coming to an end, but to be aware of exit charges.

Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at the comparison website, recommended that people check for the most competitive deal before they decide to renew their tariff, as many online deals can save them money.

However, he pointed out that it was important that they wait until their previous deal comes to an end, because that way their utility company cannot charge them an exit penalty.

For instance, Scottish Power charges customers £50 if people switch during the the lifetime of the contract.

"There are a number of very competitive tariffs currently available. Customers should check these out immediately so that they are ready to switch to a cheaper tariff."

Last week, Confused.com announced that the competitive rates being offered by smaller suppliers such as OVO and first:utility are making the larger utility companies "feel the heat" and drop their prices.
