House price rises continue, says Nationwide

House prices continued to rise in September, it has been asserted.

Martin Gahbauer, chief economist at Nationwide, made his comments as the financial services provider published its House Price Index for the month.

The figures showed that property prices increased by 0.9 per cent over the course of the 30-day period and that this was the fifth successive monthly increase.

According to the figures, the average price of a house in September was £161,816, compared to £160,224 in August.

Mr Gahbauer said: "The further increase in house prices is very much consistent with improvements in a broad range of economic and financial indicators over the last few months," noting that they all suggest that the most intense period of the recession has "probably passed".

Earlier this month, Nationwide announced that its Consumer Confidence Index rose to 63 points in August, stating that customers are beginning to feel more positive about their present situation and the future.
