Aviva calls for "modern" pensions

Aviva has called for pensions to be modern and simplify the whole process of saving for retirement.

Head of pensions at the organisation Paul Goodwin made his remarks following a new set of proposals by the financial services provider.

These include introducing flat-rate tax relief on pension contributions, allowing early access to savings before retirement and introducing alternative workplace savings plans.

Mr Goodwin claimed that these suggestions will make the structure of pensions easier to understand and will encourage people to put money away for when they retire.

He explained: "Aviva wants pensions to be built around the needs of the modern, more flexible workforce, not the workforce that existed 30 years ago."

One of the key factors that needs to form part of any modern pension scheme is the flexibility to access savings, added Mr Goodwin.

Recent research by Aviva showed that 72 per cent of pensioners considered their first year of retirement as the best year of their lives.
