John Charcol predicts year-on-year housing market rise

The mortgage broker John Charcol has predicted that when the house price indexes for October are released there will be a year-on-year increase.

Ray Boulger, a spokesperson for the organisation, had previously suggested that September figures would be the same for this year as in September 2008, which was the case according to Nationwide figures.

He said that there would be a strong finish to the year in terms of house prices, in part due to the end of the temporary suspension of stamp duty for properties valued between £125,000 and £175,000 on December 31st.

"If house prices were to continue to increase next year at the current rate there would be a serious risk of an earlier than expected increase in the Bank rate," added Mr Boulger.

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee will make its next decision about the level of the base interest rate on November 5th, when it will also report if it will be extending its quantitative easing policy.
