Student loans 'should be paid by end of October'

Delayed student loan payments should be transferred to applicants by the end of this month, according to a representative from the University of Bristol.

Student funding manager at the institution Jane Fitzwalter made her remarks following the news from the BBC that up to 16 per cent of students have not received their first loan payment yet.

Ms Fitzwalter commented that Student Finance England has assured her that all applications will be completed by October 31st, but she noted that it remains to be seen if this will be achieved.

For now, she suggested that students contact their income office or its equivalent if they are not able to pay their accommodation or tuition fees.

"If students can do without contacting Student Finance England, we may advise not to call, as anecdotal evidence is that students are often waiting for a long time to get through," added Ms Fitzwalter.

The report by the BBC stated that the Student Loans Company has laid the blame for the delays on late applications and technical problems.
