Debt worries 'causing people to visit GP'

The level of stress that people are feeling because of the debt they have is causing many of them to visit their GP, according to an industry insider.

Beccy Boden Wilks, a spokesperson for the Money Advice Trust, said that some people feel depressed because of the burden of their debt.

She advised anyone who is worried about their finances to seek independent advice as soon as possible.

Ms Boden Wilks pointed out that debt advice is free, so people should not choose to pay for counsel from any institution.

One tip for borrowers who are having money troubles is to prioritise their debts, she suggested.

"Priority debts are rent, mortgage, council tax, gas, electric and also debts which if they are not paid mean you will lose something i.e. gas disconnected, mortgage or possible home repossession," explained Ms Boden Wilks.

Her comments were made following the release of research by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Rethink which showed that "indebtedness" has been highlighted as a factor in cases of mental illness.
