Santander: Banks must focus on customer relationships

Santander has commented that banks must evolve during the current financial climate and one of the key areas that must be strengthened is the relationship with their customer base.

Steve Pateman, head of the corporate banking division of the company, made his comments following research by the organisation which suggested that business confidence is increasing.

According to a survey, one in seven UK businesses are planning to borrow more in the next six months.

Mr Pateman noted that it is encouraging to see this confidence coming back to the market and claimed that Santander is responding by being committed to developing fruitful relationships with customers to help with their borrowing needs.

He said: "The economic downturn has focused minds and businesses have adjusted accordingly.

"It is up to banks to adjust as well and for the role of banking in the UK economy to be redefined."

Last month, the bank announced that it is extending its sponsorship deal with the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team.
