Small firms 'need help during difficult financial climate'

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said that it is vital that smaller businesses receive advice to help them in the current financial climate.

John Wright, national chairman of the FSB, pointed out that cash flow can be problem, with nearly a third of small firms finding it difficult to access credit.

He noted that an independent Financial Intermediary Scheme exists in England, but this is not available in the rest of the UK.

Mr Wright said: "We need someone to act as an honest broker; someone to look at the facts, get to the heart of the matter and get a decision made quickly to help small firms."

His comments were made following news that the Royal Bank of Scotland and Natwest will be offering free advice about issues they face in obtaining credit.

This scheme will be welcomed by small business owners, continued Mr Wright, but it would be better if there was a government service.
