Stress from debt 'can have serious consequences'

An industry expert has suggested that having a large amount of debt can have a real impact on people's lives and their working habits.

Jessica Brown, a financial journalist at Talkaboutdebt.co.uk, made her comments following research commissioned by the website which indicated that 27 per cent of people in serious debt believe their work suffers because of their money worries.

She pointed out that the study also showed that a fifth of the people surveyed who are in major debt have not yet returned to work, which she called "shocking".

Ms Brown stated that it is vital that these people do not suffer alone and that they have access to help so that they can find a way out of their situation.

"The impact is incredibly far-reaching. It's clear that when stress levels get so high as to cause lack of sleep and time off work, then something needs to be done."

This week, an economic advisor from the British Chambers of Commerce claimed that although the level of debt in the UK is worrying, it is a similar situation in most other Eurozone countries.
