Economic recovery 'could be assisted by exports'

An industry expert has suggested that the export sector in the UK could help bring the country out of an economic slump, but this will require other countries to be able to buy products.

Vicky Redwood, a spokesperson for Capital Economics, made her comments following the release of a report by the Ernst & Young ITEM Club, which indicated that the weakness of the world economy will slow demand for business in the UK.

She pointed out that the country will need to wait until the rest of the world recovers in order for exports to really pick up.

Ms Redwood noted that when this does happen, it will be a huge boost to the economy.

However, she said: "Although the best hope for the UK does lie on its external sector, even so, I don't think that's going to be enough to generate a strong recovery in the overall economy."
