Accidental damage insurance "crucial" for couch, says esure

Financial services provider esure has advised consumers to take out accidental damage cover to make sure their sofas are protected.

Mike Pickard, head of home insurance at the company, made his comments as esure released a new survey, indicating that the average sofa will endure nearly 300 arguments and 1,600 spillages over a lifetime.

He pointed out that the couch is often central to modern family life, so it is no surprise that it has to be a hardy piece of furniture.

It has to endure so many visitors and spillages that accidents seem inevitable, according to Mr Pickard.

"It's crucial for homeowners to have accidental damage cover in case a disaster strikes that writes off the best seat in the house," he added.

Recent research by esure showed that pets can form the basis of many arguments between neighbours when they damage someone's property.
