The group suggested that as there are fewer hours of daylight, potential thieves may take advantage of the additional cover of darkness.
But there are several preventative measures that homeowners can take to ensure their property stays safe, according to Annette Lepper, head of More Than home insurance.
Doors should be locked - even when residents are home - and it may be worthwhile to fit window locks on the ground level as well. Instead of hiding a spare key outside where it could easily be found, leave it with a friend you trust and make sure you keep your own keys in a place where a burglar cannot reach them through the letterbox.
"Being burgled is an extremely distressing experience, so it's important to be safe and look to prevent situations that can aid a break-in," Ms Lepper concluded.
Recent research carried out by LV= found that UK homeowners are more worried about burglary than they are about being made redundant.
