Aviva advises farmers to consider insurance changes

Aviva has informed farmers that they may need to change their insurance cover if they begin making use of dormant outbuildings.

Graeme Gibson, senior agriculture underwriter at the company, pointed out that it may seem like a simple move to turn an old barn into a leisure facility, but if there is any safety risk posed to consumers then the level of cover needed is likely to change.

He claimed that farmers are finding increasingly innovative ways to make the best use of old buildings, but it is vital that they protect themselves in the event of a claim.

Mr Gibson explained: "Where farmers are seeking an alternative source of income, they must have the appropriate expertise and specialisation to protect themselves and their assets."

It is best that farmers speak to their broker about any plans, he added.

Last week, Aviva announced that it is now offering tailored insurance protection for businesses using specialist electronic equipment.
