Auto upgrades to paid-for accounts "has to stop"

If people are being upgraded to a charging package account without their authorisation then it "has to stop", according to an industry insider.

Moneynet spokesperson Andrew Hagger said that this sort of action "should never happen" and expected financial services providers to cover themselves.

He pointed out that banks who claim they have received authorisation over the phone are in a difficult situation, since there is no proof.

Mr Hagger noted that banks can make a lot of money from paid-for accounts, so naturally they want people to use them and some customers will save money.

"If you do make use of the services included, such as annual travel insurance and car breakdown cover, these are things that, if you make regular use of them, can be cost-effective," he explained.

According to research by consumer watchdog Which?, one in ten survey respondents said they do not use any of the added services that come with their charged package account.
