Repayment changes 'will put not students off'

Students will not change their mind over whether to attend university because of new repayment terms for their loans, according to a sector commentator.

Johnny Rich, editor of Push.co.uk, pointed out that students are aware that they have to pay back money when they borrow it, so changing the terms will not alter this logic.

He claimed that borrowers do not realise the benefits that come with a student loan.

Features such as payment holidays and minimum income requirements make it an easy loan to repay, he continued.

However, Mr Rich stated that a student's expectations of their degree course may increase.

"Students are facing tough times ahead and are likely to expect a lot from universities, especially if the Student Loans Company expects a lot from them over the years to come," he added.

The Student Loans Company announced this week that it is strengthening its repayments system, meaning that people who move away from the UK after their studies may be required to set up payments.
