Stay covered with esure travel insurance this winter

Tourists have been advised against travelling for winter sport holidays by esure travel insurance.

Three per cent of European travellers wrongly think that they are adequately covered by their European Health Insurance Card for all treatment.

One in ten holidaymakers will be injured on the slopes, with broken bones being one of the most common injuries, according to American Express Travel Insurance.

Without proper cover, being airlifted by helicopter can cost £1,500 and repatriation can be up to £8,000 from America and Canada. In the current financial climate due to the weakness of the pound, this could cost far more.

With one in eight people setting off down the slopes without adequate insurance esure has a few tips to make sure you are covered for every eventuality. Many insurance packages do not come with winter sports included so always read the small print to check which sports are covered.

If borrowing equipment make sure the size is correct as this can lead to accidents. Keep insurance documents close to hand as having the insurer's details can speed up reclaiming costs.

Mike Pickard, head of travel insurance at esure, said to watch out for exclusions on certain extreme sports and to check with the insurance provider if anything is unclear and avoid "a hefty medical bill if you were injured".
