Not haggling on car price could cost £229m, says Sainsbury's Finance

Accepting the asking price on a new car could collectively cost British motorists £229 million in the next six months, Sainsbury's Finance has found.

Of the 1.14 million people currently planning to buy a new vehicle before February 2010, 11 per cent are not planning to attempt negotiating a better deal.

The result could be that many people end up spending more than they need to when buying a new motor, as a What Car? survey found that the average saving made through haggling is £1,893.

Head of Sainsbury's Loans Steven Baillie said that sales of new cars were down 20 per cent in September on previous years, despite the scrappage scheme. But for the buyer, "this means that now is a good time to negotiate a significant discount on the price of a new vehicle".

Earlier research by Sainsbury's Finance found that the number of people planning to buy a new car between September 2009 and February 2010 had fallen by over a million compared to the same period last year.
