Free software for Alliance and Leicester internet banking customers

Alliance and Leicester is giving away free computer virus protection to its online banking customers to give extra protection from fraud and viruses.

The Rapport program protects information put into an internet browser, including customer ID and pin. It also helps prevents harmful viruses and redirects users away from look-a-like websites.

The software, available from the company's website, has already been downloaded by one million customers.

Tim Brunt, Alliance and Leicester's head of internet banking, urged all customers to get the software, as it could save them from dealing with the "stress and inconvenience of dealing with fraud on their account".

He also stated that the company would never email individuals to confirm their account details and warned customers to be wary of fake emails asking for them.

The bank, part of the Santander group, offers various services, including the Online Saver 5, and internet account with 3.15 per cent gross AER.
